Trezor Start Start Guide

Welcome to the World of Self-Custody

Congratulations on taking the first step towards true financial freedom. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to set up your new Trezor hardware wallet and secure your digital assets for the long term. Follow each step carefully and take your time.

Step 1: Inspect the Package

Before you even touch the device, carefully inspect the packaging for any signs of tampering. All official Trezor devices are shipped in a securely sealed box. The holographic seal on the box should be intact and free of tears or marks. If the box looks opened or tampered with in any way, **do not proceed** and contact Trezor support immediately. This initial inspection is your first line of defense against supply chain attacks.

**Warning:** A brand new Trezor device should never have been connected to a computer or pre-configured. If you see a pre-existing recovery seed, or if the device prompts you for a PIN before you've set one, it is a sign of a fraudulent device.

Step 2: Connect and Install Trezor Suite

Carefully connect your Trezor to your computer using the USB cable provided in the box. The device will power on and display the Trezor logo. Next, go to **suite.trezor.io/web/** in your browser. This is the **official and only place** to download the Trezor Suite software. The Trezor Suite is your primary interface for managing your device and your cryptocurrencies. It is a desktop application that provides a secure environment for all your crypto operations.

**Important:** Never use a browser extension or any other third-party software. Only download Trezor Suite directly from the official Trezor website.

Step 3: Create a New Wallet & Firmware

The Trezor Suite will automatically guide you through the initial setup process. It will first check if your device has the latest firmware. Firmware is the operating system of your Trezor. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install it. After the firmware is installed, you will be prompted to create a **new wallet**. This process generates your unique private keys on the device itself, in a completely offline and secure environment.

**Remember:** Your private keys are the only thing that proves you own your crypto. This process ensures they are never exposed to the internet, not even during creation.

Step 4: Back Up Your Recovery Seed (Crucial)

Your **recovery seed** is a sequence of 12 or 24 words that acts as your master key. It is the **only way** to recover your funds if your Trezor is lost, stolen, or damaged. The Trezor device will display these words one by one on its screen. You must **write them down verbatim** on the recovery card provided in the box.

**Never take a picture of your recovery seed, store it on a computer, or save it in any digital format.** This is the biggest mistake a user can make. Anyone with access to these words has access to all your funds. Store the recovery card securely and privately, in a location that is fire-safe and waterproof. It should be treated with the same care as a large sum of cash.

Step 5: Set a PIN

The final step in the setup process is to set a PIN. The PIN is used to protect your Trezor device from physical access. When prompted, the Trezor will display a random number pad on its screen. You will use the Trezor's physical buttons (or touchscreen on a Trezor Model T) to enter the numbers. **You will enter the PIN on the device screen itself, not your computer keyboard.** This unique PIN entry method prevents keyloggers on your computer from recording your password.

Choose a PIN that is at least 4 digits long. It is recommended to use 6 digits or more for added security.

You're All Set!

That's it! You have successfully set up your Trezor hardware wallet. Your device is now ready to send and receive cryptocurrencies with the highest level of security. Your private keys are securely stored on the device, offline, and you have a reliable backup in the form of your recovery seed.

You can now navigate back to the Trezor Suite and begin using your wallet. You are the sole custodian of your funds, and you now have the power to protect your digital wealth.

A Final Word on Security

Remember, the Trezor is a powerful tool, but your own vigilance is the most important factor in crypto security. Always verify the authenticity of websites, never share your recovery seed, and double-check all transaction details on your Trezor's screen before confirming.
